MasCom-portable? PUHLEASE!

I’ve been looking like shit ever since the start of 2nd sem. We’re bombarded by so many projects that we don’t know which one to do first. A month passed and it’s like I don’t know what’s “sleep” anymore.

Having 4-5hours of sleep is a blessing. I savor it before I work my butt off to find my news, satisfy Sir Rikki, learning the theories of development communication, trying to come up with ideas for our documentary, showing up for my duty every Friday for our Radio show, blah blah blah. You say Mascom’s easy? THINK AGAIN.

From brainstorming an event to organizing it. From learning about news writing to literally roaming around Davao to find a news. From finalizing our radio program flow to trying our best to capture an audience. Every presentation should be creative. We never think outside the box. We decorate it.

My schedule’s so demanding that I don’t have time to go out and chill with friends. I admit I once underestimated MasCom but right now, I want to hide from every responsibilities that I have to face everyday. Responsibilities for the school, my personal relationships with other people and family. Everyday I wake up, telling myself, “KONTI NALANG.” I made it this far. I ain’t turning back. I will graduate this 2013. Fuck you sleep, I can catch up with you later. lals

For Our Newsletter

I was assigned to do a column for our group’s newsletter. And I want to share what I wrote. It’s about why we need sex education. :D

Sex Education
By: Girlianne Drensen L. Rojas

The whole topic of having sex education in the curriculum is controversial. The liberated and outspoken will argue about taking control of our own body and the right to know more about sexuality. While the conservatives and the religious will argue about having this kind of education will go against the teachings of the church.

Ignorance is a very big factor for early pregnancy and rampant STD’s. And ignorance is what the conservatives and the religious wants us to keep. The religious and the conservatives strongly believe that it should be discussed within the family or people should abstain, but does this solve the problem? I don’t think so.

Sex, first of all, is a topic kids don’t usually talk about with parents. Of course having sex education will not rob the parents the right to teach their children but to guide them. However, many parents are not comfortable discussing sex with their kids. They will tell them a story about “The Birds and the Bees”. At school, that story will be supported and discussed thus the knowledge of human sexuality for younger people will broaden.

Second, kids are bombarded with sexual images and topics from the media. Kids being so curious all the time will soon try this out.

Third, children are having sex at earlier age. You can’t deny the fact that it is happening. If only parents would take the time to talk with their kids and explain sex to them.

Sex education does not promote promiscuity but knowledge about human sexuality. Sex education will not teach students about Kama Sutra but on the science of reproduction, physical care and hygiene, correct values and the norms of interpersonal relations to avoid pre-marital sex and teenage pregnancy. This will also educate young people on issues that directly affect them and empower them to make informed choices and decisions.
